September is Library Card Sign-Up Month
This month is Library Card Sign-Up Month at Gail Borden Library. Its first branch – the “Rakow Branch” – is located on Bowes Road, just west of the intersection with Randall Road.
The $4.2 million branch library debuted on August 15 at 10,000 square feet and is designed for expansion to 30,000 square feet. Materials for checkout will be current, popular items. Many self service elements such as an outdoor 24/7 DVD kiosk will be featured.
The building is eligible to receive silver or gold LEED certification and contains many green features, including the following:
- Extended exterior overhangs that provide sunscreens to cool natural light
- Low-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality
- Maximum natural light and sensor controlled artificial lighting to minimize electrical usage
- A geothermal well system that responds to the earth’s constant temperature of approximately 55 degrees, which will save energy when heating or cooling the building
Local businesses are asked to participate and show their support of literacy by offering an incentive to patrons who show their library card throughout the month of September. So if you have a local business and would like more information, contact Liz Clemmons at (847) 429-4698.
What other ways can we help promote literacy? We would love to hear your input.

The downtown library is amazing and comfortable. Here’s a link to a page in their website that shows the “River Room”, which is a quiet area with a fireplace overlooking the Fox River. It’s beautiful in there.
