HomeGain recently released the results of their 2012 National Home Ownership Satisfaction Survey. Over 1,400 homeowners were asked about their satisfaction with owning a home and price appreciation or depreciation.
Results were interesting:

72% were satisfied with owning a home
24% of satisfied homeowners said price appreciation was the primary reason for satisfaction, with the remainder listing other reasons for satisfaction
Other reasons for satisfaction included pride of ownership and freedom to control home improvements and upgrades.
Homeowners who purchased within the last three years were most satisfied
